Senate Committee on the Economy to Hold Public Workshops Next Week

On Wednesday, January 21st, the Florida Senate Select Committee on the Economy will hold a public workshop from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the Children's Services Center at 2300 High Ridge Road, Boynton Beach.

This committee has been specifically tasked with providing solutions to Florida's current economic problems and wants to hear directly from Florida's employers. We strongly encourage you to attend this hearing and provide 3-4 minutes of testimony to this Senate committee.

The committee is charged by Senate President Jeff Atwater (R-North Palm Beach) to "create incentives and eliminate impediments to economic recovery and growth and esure that government functions more simply, more transparently, less expensively and more effectively." The committee is authorized to develop legislation or constitutional amendments.

"We are looking for very specific, practical actions the state can take to either remove obstacles to business activity or change the incentives and strategies the state uses to help Florida businesses grow," according to Senator Don Gaetz (R-Niceville), chairman of the committee.

In addition to Gaetz and Ring, the bi-partisan committee includes former Senate Presidents Jim King (R-Jacksonville) and Ken Pruitt (R-Port St. Lucie) as well as Senators J.D. Alexander (R-Lake Wales), Mike Haridopolos (R-Melbourne), Mike Bennett (R-Bradenton), Garrett Richter (R-Naples), Eleanor Sobel (D-Hallandale Beach), Tony Hill (D-Jacksonville) and Dan Gelber (D-Miami).

All meetings and workshops of the select committee are open to the public. To follow the work of the committee go to
The Florida Senate or to provide direct comments, suggestions and guidance to committee members email here.

For more information about committee workshops or the work of the panel, contact the Senate Select Committee on Florida's Economy at (850) 487-5494.

The Family and Medical Leave Act
- New Changes that May Affect Your Business-

REMINDER: The United States Department of Labor recently published new regulations interpreting the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) that become effective TODAY, Jan. 16, 2009.

One of the most significant modifications is that the Department of Labor has changed its stance of Professional Employer Organizations (PEO). Under the new regulations, a client of a PEO with fewer than 50 employees will not have to comply with the FMLA simply because it does business with the PEO. This could be cost saving!

For more information on the FMLA,
visit the US Department of Labor's website.

A Word From the Jupiter Police Department

We are experiencing a slight increase in commercial burglaries.  The method of entry involves the suspects twisting off the locks to businesses with some type of tool, then making entry and stealing electronics and money.

Because most suspects do not like to work too hard when committing crimes, law enforcement feels that improved locking mechanisms will aid towards decreasing these types of over night commercial burglaries.

Business representatives: contact your local police departments to seek advise on the types of locks that would best secure their doors.
